The Complete Book of the Summer Olympics 2000
Published in Hardcover by Overlook Press (01 December, 2000)
Author: David Wallechinsky
Average review score:

The Golden Book
At the first time (1992) I bought The Complete Book of the Summer Olympics it impressed me with details. The 2000 edition is my third and I do not have any doubt: this is the most complete guide about the Olympic History.

The best book on sports I have ever read!
When I first bought this book, I thought it would be like all of my other Olympic Resources. Giving some imformation, but not every detail you could want. This book replaces all of my others when it comes to stats, politics in the olympics, drugs, and others. Although not having many pictures, it makes up for all of the wonderful info it contains. Tell me that you knew that only 1 country entered in the, get this, a team parallel bar competition in 1896. I reccomend it to anyone.

DON'T WAIT-BUY IT NOW
If you are interested in the history, politics, rules of the games, and human-interest stories of the modern Olympics, this is the book to have by your side while you watch the games this September.

I bought this book to research a trivia question, started reading it, and couldn't put it down. Never having been too interested in sports or the Olympics, I was surprised how quickly I was caught up in Wallechinsky's book. Now, I can't wait for the games to begin.

Fire Line: The Summer Battles of the West
Published in Hardcover by Fulcrum Pub (May, 1995)
Author: Michael Thoele
Average review score:

Great Insight on the fireline
Probably one of the best wildland fire books I have ever read. In my 25+ years of firefighting this one captures the scenes of a wildland fire the best. The pictures are great and the narration and stories truly catch you up in the whole fire scene. Buy it for the pictures or the stories--but get a copy, You will enjoy it for years to come.

Excellent
This coffee-table sized book has some incredible photos and a great human-interest slant on the world of wildland firefighting. There is a bit on the history of wildland fire in America and on tactics and fire ecology, but the author really shines when he describes the subculture of those who fight wildland fire, and why many of them forsake "normal" careers or social status to come back year after year. Wildland fire in rural America is one of the few paths to genuine adventure still available in the modern world, and is probably the closest thing to a positive rite of passage there is today. It is an opportunity to live and work in the wilderness which most people will never have. I've been there, done that myself and found this book of much interest. Although, with the catastrophic fire seasons of 2000 and 2002 this book is no longer quite up to date. Looking forward to a revised and updated edition.

A Firefighter's View...
When I first picked up a copy of Michael Thoele's Fire Line, I was quite skeptical, having served 5 years in the late 1990's as a Region One Firefighter for the U.S. Forest Service in Montana while working my way through college to earn an engineering degree at Montana State University. All too often, Books, Documentaries, and movies leave much to be desired when it comes to correctly describing the world of Wildland Firefighting and the characters that inhabit that world. After having read the work completely, I must say that I am very impressed. I have read it now more than a few times, and still return to it when I feel the need to keep alive all the wonderful memories of the unique people that I met and the experiences that we shared.

Having started out as an "Engine Slug" on the Gallatin National Forest, and having worked my way up and around the fire eschelons-- serving as a helitack crew member, eventually earning my quals as an Incident Commander, and serving my time as a Rookie Smokejumper in Missoula, I have seen and done much that Mr. Thoele accurately describes. I think what makes the book work so well is that the author lets the book be itself. By this, I mean that many of the stories and photos are those related to and given to the author. The research for this book is absolutly top-notch, [as it MUST be], and takes nothing away from the fast-paced, hard-hitting, gritty and spine-tingling stories related by the author.

In my opinion, this is the finest book currently on the market that documents Wildland Firefighting in the western United States, both in scope and depth. It is a fitting tribute to all Wildland Firefighters, Past, Present and Future.

Fly Fishing the Mountain Lakes (Summer of Discovery Series)
I loved this book! Gary is a great writer and makes his books full of well researched, sound information. In this small volume he tells you where the lakes are (they really exist where he says-I checked topos!) and challenges you to go! Wonderful, fun book!!

Excellent
This book mixed enteraining stories with valuable information on Gary's years of observation of the behavior of trout in high country lakes. I have read numerous books and articles regarding techniques to use on high country lakes, but have rarely found such valuable information as revealed in this book. In fact, I have read this book twice over the last several months in an effort to soak up all the information, and plan to read it again before the local mountain lakes start to thaw. I would strongly recommend this book to beginning and experienced anglers alike.

Very informative and fun.
Great reading for the flyfisher who enjoys the high country or likes to get away from river crowds. Lots of fun new methods to try out. Trying to figure out where I can keep my pack goat.

Summer Secrets

SAIL INTO ADVENTURE
Stormy relationships and a stormy sailing adventure combine to make this a better-than-average read. Barbara Freethy keeps you guessing about the big family secret and the ending is predictible but still fun. It's a great way to pass a summer afternoon at the beach or just curled up on the living room sofa.

Suspenseful, hard to put down
If you want a love story wrapped up with some intrigue, SUMMER SECRETS is the book for you. All the while I was reading the book, I was trying to guess the secret ... and never could! The romance and mystery will keep you turning the pages as fast as you can. Great read.

Beautifully crafted ... a definite winner
I, for once, never disappointed with Barbara Freethy, ever since I purchased my first book of her (One True Love) few years ago. She is my favorite author when it comes to family stories. She always manages to write such beautiful, heartwarming, and also real family stories. The joy, the tears, the fears, the loyalty ... they are always there, knotted into one amazing story. She did it again with SUMMER SECRETS. Each character stands out with their own self. The sisters are uniquely different with one another but nevertheless, united with a strong bond called "family. The romance of course, is also beautiful. I love the chemistry between Tyler and Kate, also Ashley and Sean. I just wish Caroline will get her own man. This book is wonderful read ... if you don't know Barbara Freethy, you're missing such a talented author!

Sheiks Of Summer
Published in Paperback by Silhouette (August, 1902)
Authors: Susan Mallery, Alexandra Sellers, and Fiona Brand
Average review score:

Fiona Brand is the reason to buy this!!
I bought this book, too, to read Kismet. I'd read an excerpt on the Intimte Moments Board and I was hooked. It is simply brilliant. Kismet should have been its own book, it is so powerful. I can't see why the previous reviewer is raving about Ms Sellers' story to be honest. I would have given this anthology a 5 based on Ms Brand's story alone, because the other two drag this anthology down. Good stories - but Kismet surpasses them.

A collection of very romantic stories!
Each one of these stories is worth the reading time, and the price off the book!! This is one of the better trilogys of by multiple authors that I have read in a long time! I personally greatly enjoyed this book, and i think anyone who enjoy's ether romance stories or Susan Mallery in general will find this a great read!!! Thats all I can say without giving away the plots of the stories, just get a hold of a copy for yourself and I'm sure you'll agree!

Gritty and gripping emotional story from Alexandra Sellers
Alexandra Sellers' contribution to this anthology is another moving and intense Sons of the Desert story. Hadi al Hajar is a Cup Companion to Prince Omar--readers of this series will recognize what that means--and from the moment he sets eyes on Kate Drummond he's determined to resist the pull. Kate gives as good as she gets, though, on their journey through Barakat looking for a mythical, magical valley. Finally, in a remote mountain inn, they both crack....beautiful and intense. The other two stories also worth reading, Susan Mallery writes a sweet virgin story and Fiona Brand a strong time-slip romance. For those who haven't discovered the Sons of the Desert series yet, this is a pretty good introduction, although the story isn't as quite romantically hot and sexy as Sellers' usual.

Summer of Pearls
Published in Hardcover by Forge (September, 2000)
Author: Mike Blakely
Average review score:

ITS DIFFERENT!!!!
Summer of Pearls is different from other Blakely book I have read. I was disappointed at first but the more I read the more I really enjoyed it. It is really about three 14 year old boys and their experience the summer of the pearls. Ben Crowell and his two friends have many things happen to them that summer, the finding of pearls, the catching of fish, the feeding of hogs, carring water and just growing up. Billy Treat is the one that teaches them much, especially Ben. Trevor Brigginshaw is good as the pearl buyer who has come to town. Judd Kelso is the villian. It is but together to make a very good story. It will hold your attention. The ending is great. The whole book I kept thinking of "The Waltons".

SUMMER OF PEARLS a real jewel
The more I read Mr. Blakely's novels, the more I'm intrigued by his creative vision. SUMMER OF PEARLS, as far as I can tell, is a departure from his epic American Indian epic, COMANCHE DAWN, and his finely crafted westerns, like SHORTGRASS SONG and TOO LONG AT THE DANCE. What the author demonstrates in his most recent novel is his God-given ability to tell a compelling story--in this case the quiet saga of a dying east Texas town that explodes after the discovery of pearls in Lake Caddo. In my opinion, Blakely has yet to receive the acclaim he deserves. Read this book despite its horrendous cover and see if you don't agree that he's one of the best living writers mining the American historical vein.

Summer of Pearls is a real gem. . . .
Mike Blakely is a gifted writer. Make no mistake about it. Some of his books are epic in scope, theme and characterization. Some, like this one, are set in one little place and involve only a few people. And Mike does each with great grace and skill.

SUMMER OF PEARLS is a wonderful book: a story set in a small town, told by an old man as he looks back on the most enjoyable and meaningful summmer of his life. In scope and feel, the book reminds me very much of that classic movie, DAYS OF HEAVEN (Richard Gere's first movie, I believe). It is contained, the style is spare and crisp, the characters are rich and full, and you leave the novel with that sense of poignancy that we all have when we look back on those bitter sweet times in our lives.

SUMMER OF PEARLS is a beautiful book, in many ways. If you want to find out just how good a writer Mike is, read this, then read COMANCHE DAWN. You will wonder how the same guy could write each. Both very fine novels, but so different from one another.

Two Summers Too Hot
Published in Hardcover by Xlibris Corporation (07 March, 2001)
Author: Wilson Crawford

Brings Back Memories
"Two Summers Too Hot" brings back memories of growing up in my hometown. It is a short book by most standards, but a fun read. The author takes the characters in a small southern town and spins an entertaining yarn around them. The editor missed some things but it did not interfere with the story. I enjoyed reading this little piece of Southern literature.

Summertime reading fun
"Two Summers Too Hot" is great summertime reading fun. It gives an accurate portayal of summer in the south, and throws in a clever plot and enjoyable characters. I'm not sure I'll ever trust my pharmacist again! Carter Benfield is a most enjoyable young boy who has to grow up fast in the heat and humidity of a Linton, North Carolina night. You will be surprised at the scheming and plotting of Allison Blackburn, bold and brazen at the age of sweet sixteen. I felt sympathy for the men entrapped in her web of deceit and for her hard-working parents. Buy and enjoy reading this diamond-in-the-rough, pleasant summertime surprise. I look forward to his second book and more enjoyable characters

Great book!!
I loved this book. It is not a long book which makes it nice to read over a weekend, which is what I did. The main characters, Carter Benfield and Allison Blackburn, are both very interesting. Carter has the innocence of a twelve year old boy who is beginning to discover some of life's exciting secrets. Allison is a hot, willful, young woman who wants more that the small town of Linton, North Carolina can offer. I like the way the lives of these two characters are detailed, then gradually come together in an exciting, suspenseful climax. I look forward to more books by this author!

Bedtime Stories

Bedtime stories
Dick Summer is a great story teller! Whether you are familiar with Dick from his Loving Touch books of poetry or from his career in radio, you will welcome this CD. The CD should also create new fans for Dick's warm and soothing style of narration.

Dick says his father and mother used to read bedtime stories to him. His father spoke of adventure and his mother read him poetry.

Dick's bedtime stories are about love. They're told from the standpoint of a man speaking to a woman. They are about mature love, immature love, requited and unrequited love and even illicit love.

Dick's delivery is also very smooth and intimate. From some of the stories, I felt as if he were saying things I haven't got the words to say. A woman listening will most likely feel that Dick is speaking directly to her.

I'm an unabashed Dick Summer fan and I recommend this CD.

A Magical Voice! - Dick Summer!
I just listened to this Cd again after about 30 times . His voice is the sound of a soft summer shower as you are walking through a forest ; as sensual as a first kiss from the girl you admired for months but were afraid to apparoach;
Dick Summer is the the only one that could dull your nerves and at the same time heighten your senses! Thank You , Dick Summer!

Bedtime Stories by Dick Summer
If you grew up in the northeast in the '60s and '70s, you know that Dick Summer was the king of late night radio! He wasn't a bombastic monarch of the airwaves, but a soothing, reassuring and entertaining storyteller. When I first found out about this CD, it was like meeting up with an old friend! You'll enjoy these stories ESPECIALLY if you have company at bedtime ; )! They'll definitely enhance the experience. Even if you're not familiar with Mr. Summer's work, get this CD for some bigtime bedtime fun...

Common Enemy (Extreme Zone, No 5)

Awesome! Just plain AWESOME!!!
This was a good book - the third best, I think. I think that the ones with Noah and Billie are the best, though. This is definately one of the best series I have ever read. I hope that it continues for a while, because it is very suspensefull and exciting - with a hint of drama, too! It is awsome - but my favorite - #2. Read it and you will be hooked on the series - beleive me!

This is one of the most suspencful book series that I have read in a long time
This book is one of the best books that I have ever read. After I finished reading book five of the series I headed back to the bookstore to buy the first four books. I can't wait til book six is published

One of the best series I have read in a long time.
Even though this series was written mainly for juvenilles and young adults, I would personally recommend it for anyone who likes to read an in-depth plot with realistic people with dynamic personalities, an ever-growing mystery, suspense and, of corse, action. I can't wait for the next book, "Inhuman Fury."

Good-Bye to Love (Last Summer, First Love Book 2)
Published in Paperback by Scholastic (July, 1994)
Authors: Jennifer Baker and Carin Greenberg Baker
Average review score:

The title says it all.
The first time I read A time to love book 1 I was 14 years old. I went back to the library to try and Good-bye to love. They didn't have it. Years passed and one day am at friends house and am looking at her bookshelf and i run across A time to love, It all came back to me about Holly And Chris and how the book ended. She didn't have Good-bye to love so i came to amazon and i found it. I was so happy when i got it. Am 20 now so i reread A time to love before i read Good-bye to love. So i see a difference in the writing because its for younger crowd but the love and the emotions are there. I was so happy for Holly when she saw the city (New York) for the first time. All the stores and the traffic. Am a Newyorker so i loved that part. I loved the way Chris did not make her go or asked her about going to see a doctor when she was getting sick, b/c he knew that was not what she wanted. they saw so much in two weeks that i thought they were in the road for longer time. It makes me want to go on a road trip. If i can change one thing it would be to add one more chapter years down the road maybe 5 or 10 to see how Chris and her family were doing. Its a good read but get ready for the tissues cause you're going to need it towards the end of the book

The absolute Best!!
I am the romantic out of all my friends. Once i started reading this book, i could not put it down! It was most certainly the best books I have ever read. This book and the first one was very moving and touching. The plot was great and the characters where like they were real because of the emotion. Like I said, the BEST! Jennifer Baker is one of my favorite authors and I'd sure be happy if she wrote another story similar to this. IN the end of this book, it left me in tears because it was so amazing! I cried so much, my mother had to come in my room and comfort me. I recommend this to all types of book lovers out there. You'd sure get hooked on to this!!

EXCELLENT AND TRUTHFUL
This book amazed. I always seem to be drawn to awfully sad books. I don't know why. I guess I like to cry! Chris Franklin and Holly Paige's love for each other was truly beautiful. I may only be 14, but true love was evident. I hope people will read this book and realize what we, people who live normal, healthy lives, take for granted. My greatest sympathy to those people who have a life threatening illness. I don't know how they can deal with it, it certainly scares me. Those people are so very courageous and I admire that. I take a look at my life and realize what I take for granted. This book made me realize that. Thank you Ms. Baker, your story has opened my eyes. I intend to advise my friends to reading this excellent book.
